I prefered the anime. I just watched it all, then read what came after in the manga. The anime finishes a lot earlier then the manga, and its better animated and flows a lot faster.

Finally, to answer your question, I think it is better you read Chapter 1 to 157 so that you get your canon facts right. Then, if you have time, you can watch the anime [I would even suggest to start as from episode 51] just to get some good action scenes and also to complete your DGM experience. Then, if you are a co DGM fan, just continue reading and follow it until the end. That said, you could also start with the anime and then read the manga if you are the type to like a manga because of the anime but maybe youll find the start of the anime a bit slow esp. with the fillers in the first half.

yeah I agreethe latest chapters of d.gray man were pretty crappy or i guess messybut ive watched the anime first then read the manga where the anime stopped..
