If the 2 substances(one solid and the other a liquid) are thoroughly immiscible, just allow it to stand and pour out the liquid carefully. This is decantation. If on the other hand, the 2 mix some what, it is better to pass the mixture through a fine sieve which allows out the liquid but retains the solid. This is filtration. The question is which is not fast but which separates the mixture neatly. Here filtration undoubtedly scores. On the other hand if you are in a hurry, decantation is better.
