Actually 6 picas specifically = .997 inch but it close enough at 5 inches nobody cares
According to the meaning of pica;
pica a linear unit (1/6 inch) used in printing.
5 inches would be equal to 6 pica per inch times 5 inches or 30 pica.
However, pica on a typewriter differs from this definition. If you are looking for the length according to a typewriter it is meant as a font size of ten characters per horizontal inch. Which would give you 50 characters of print.
