(Also suspicious that the 200 year old handkerchief was so white and the monogram was MACHINE STITCHED!)

If the story about the doll was true, itd be all over the internet. I think its all just part of his showmanship.

RE:

im just watchin darren browns new programe on channel 4, and he has a doll called the svengali doll and its controlling this dude like making him write a set of some old womans initials and stuff like that but can anyone give me any history on it or something thanks

There is a clockwork bird in a cage in the Hermatage in st Petersburg from the 1700s so they were more than capable of making mechanical objects. However, i feel the doll story is fake and he has just borrowed the idea of Svengali from the novel Trilby knowing not many of the audience will know the tale and because of the hypnosis idea. Very creative and impressive though.

Derren stated that the doll was constructed at the end of the 1700s. I would question the ability of 18th century engineers to construct a machine that can mimick human actions. I would question the ability of a 21st century engineer to construct this machine when there is no electricity or fuel of any sort to power the mechanism (exluding it being wound up, however this seems unlikely because the lever would have to be huge).

Ok firstly the prop he uses i.e. the doll is entirely irrelevent it is used to capture the imagination of the audience because of its back story, which in turn suggests to the audience from the onset that it is something that it isnt. Which is a blank of wood with cloggs inside. In truth anything with a face could be used for this illusion as the face is the only key feature when convincing a participant of the audience and the audience themselves that they are witnessing someone being hypnotised by an Imamate object. thoughout darrens illusion with the svengali doll when he has a member of the audience seated he always referrers to the DOLL having control over him, he does this on many occasions as well as playing the Childs music to further communicate that the svengali has control as the participant is facing away from the doll at all times, remember everything you see is only down to Darren. Now your question about the initials. How did the svengali convey the initials on the hankerchief to the participants mind Answer . It didnt again its just a doll Darren uses a word association trick. Watch the video again and see how many (D) and (S) words his uses when just before he asks him to write the initials down. watch the video again and see for yourself Darren even uses a definition of a word starting with a D and the definition being a S. we tend to absorb more information unconsciously when we are told its factual so the definition he used was vital in getting the participant to write D and S. Hope this helps

It also seems implausible that at that time there would be sound sensors (to respond to the bell derren used) which would still be fully functioning today that would command the doll to move.
