Youre not truly wasting your education if your classes have you (albeit in a backwards way) working towards initiating a change that could push you towards a successful career. Arguably, the only waste occurs the longer you let your current program stand in the way of your focus. Keep in mind Im not trying to support an idea that slacking off is good, but rather that accepting that youre going down the wrong road and taking action to prevent that further is a fundamentally smart thing to do.
