It comes from the board game of ss and ladders wheren you throw a die and your move can end on a neutral square, one with a ladder, or one with a s. The neutral square means you stay on it until your next turn, the various ladders will advance you much further up the board, the ss mean that you slither down them to an earlier point. The longest s was the one which took you back to the starting square.
