That only stands to reason since an animated gif is NOT a video file. VLC doesnt play animated gifs! Open them with your browser if you dont have any other method.

Its my favourite media player and I highly recommend it over any other audio/video player.
VLC (video lan connect) is a great open source software to play any types of video files. VLC has a built in dvd decodere and works with many different video and audio formats including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac.

Animated image / video file = tomAto / tomato
A video is essentially a load of single images bunched together not any different to a gif, granted their intended use is different but VLC should still be capable of playing it.
the only helpful contribution I can give is that they dont play for me either.
