Sx is called the sample standard deviation. Its when the data is only a sampling of the entire amount of data. So when they calculate it, they divide by (n 1) at the end instead of n.

x is the population standard deviation, meaning all the data were used to calculate it, not just part, and they divide by n at the end.

So if your problem gives data from a sample use Sx and if it gives all the data use x
